Following a rigorous tender process DCUK FM is pleased to announce our successful award onto the Science Museum Group Historic Collections Asbestos Framework. The Science Museum Group is the world’s pre-eminent Museum devoted to the history of science, technology, industry, and Medicine.
This framework covers asbestos removal within the museum’s historic collections. The risk of asbestos goes beyond buildings. Asbestos has been widely used in many objects for hundreds of years. The fireproofing properties asbestos holds meant it was widely used across many industries. While the remarkable physical properties of asbestos were known even to the ancient and medieval worlds, it was the coming of the Industrial Revolution, during the latter part of the 19th century, that elevated asbestos mining and manufacturing into a thriving and lucrative intercontinental enterprise.
Museum colleagues work hard to study, record, digitise, pack and transport incredible items from the Science Museum Group Collection assessing hazards including the presence of asbestos. Objects with thermal insulation, sound insulation, fire protection, steam components or high-pressure connections, electric components or ignition, cement-based products, friction products or textured coverings/coatings are all properties reviewed during the museum’s preliminary asbestos checklist test. Any high-risk objects identified are remediated under this framework.
DCUK are one of four contractors awarded a place on this framework and with our extensive knowledge and experience in working within Historic buildings we look forward to continuing our working relationship with the museum.
